Denver Health Care Reform: A Bold Approach
A meeting was held Thursday between the Blue Ribbon Commission on Health Care Reform in Denver, Colorado and several of the state’s lawmakers concerning recommendations on health care policy reform.
Democrats and Republicans introduced plans then debated on drastic changes versus an array of minor ones. Major issues such as rising premiums, private insurance systems, and how the reforms will be funded were discussed by a 27-member panel.
Denver Democrat Anne McGhion and Republican Spencer Swalm, two key figures in the debate, are quoted in the article. The most significant push was in favor of a government-run single-payer system much like that seen in Canada. However, several supporters who held a rally outside the state Capital expressed concerns that the recommendations did little to move the state’s current system past profit-driven insurance companies, pointing out that consumer spending, Medicaid’s budget, and dollars going toward insurance subsidies would all significantly increase or in some cases double.
Highlights of the panel’s recommendations and a brief list of what some other states are suggesting for health care reform are included at the end of the article.
