Short Term Health
Short term health insurance is designed to fill “gaps” in coverage for people who are on the move such as people who are between jobs and therefore temporarily unable to access an employer’s group insurance plan. Short term insurance is also a good option for a student just out of school but not yet employed. There is also an entire suite of “vacation health insurance” options that make sure the traveler has quality coverage while on the road.
Short term coverage may also be important to someone has left a job and cannot afford to pay the entire premium on the insurance that was offered at the workplace. Federal law allows people to take health coverage with them when they leave a job, but the individual must pay 100% of the premium because the employer is no longer supporting coverage.
Often a short term health insurance policy will be designed to provide essential security against major medical problems, but won’t cover standard doctor visits, periodic lab work, etc. That sort of coverage is a good choice for someone who is in transition and has good health.
Other short term policies offer the entire gamut of coverage and can be purchased for periods of thirty days up to one year. Comprehensive coverage comes with a deductible; naturally, the higher deductible means a lower premium.
